South-West (Nairutya) direction in Vastu
The South-West, or Nairutya, is the earth zone. It gives stability, and Vastu reserves it for the head of the family: the master bedroom, heavy wardrobes and storage. It should be the heaviest and highest part of the home. Entrances, toilets, kitchens and underground water are avoided here.

What suits the South-West
- Master bedroom
South-West is the earth zone. It gives the head of the family stability and sound sleep.
- Bedroom
This is a good zone for a bedroom and supports rest.
- Store room
Heavy storage in this zone adds stability.
- Staircase
A staircase in this zone is in line with Vastu.
- Overhead water tank
A heavy water tank in this zone is well placed.
Acceptable here (minor defect)
- Kids' bedroom
This zone is not ideal for children. West or North-West are better.
- Living room / hall
This zone welcomes light and positive energy for family time.
- Study room / home office
This zone can make focus harder. East, North or North-East are better.
What to avoid in the South-West
- Kitchen
Fire in this zone clashes with its element. South-East is ideal, North-West is the next best.
- Guest bedroom
This zone is not ideal for a guest room. North-West is best.
- Toilet / bathroom
A toilet here is traditionally linked to loss of health or savings. North-West or West are better.
- Pooja room
Prayer in this zone is not recommended. North-East is ideal.
- Dining room
This zone is not ideal for dining. West is traditionally best.
- Main entrance
An entrance from this direction is traditionally considered challenging.
- Balcony / sit-out
Openness in this zone is traditionally less favourable.
- Underground water tank / borewell
Underground water here is traditionally not advised. North-East is best.
- Septic tank
A septic tank here is traditionally not advised. North-West is best.
